Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker has insisted that the club won’t face a prolonged period in the doldrums like Liverpool.

David Moyes was sacked after only ten months in the job in April and Manchester United finished seventh in the league, having won the league in the previous campaign.

Louis van Gaal will take over as the manager next month and Parker has refused to believe that Manchester United will find it hard to get back into the top four next season.

“United will qualify for the Champions League”, the 50-year-old told the club’s official site.

Liverpool have failed to win the league since their 18th triumph in 1989/90 and some fear Manchester United might face the same predicament.

However, Parker doesn’t believe that in the modern times a club of the size of Manchester United will find it difficult to get back to the top.

“People keep telling me they could do a Liverpool but, although that’s happened before at the club [throughout the 1970s and 1980s], it won’t happen anymore.

“Football has changed and it won’t happen to this kind of club anymore. People have learned from the past.”
