Montpellier president Louis Nicollin has accused Newcastle United of seeking to take the club for idiots over Remy Cabella.

Newcastle made a bid of €8m for Cabella recently, a sum which Montpellier instantly turned down, believing it grossly undervalues the France international midfielder.

Nicollin is looking for €15m to sell the playmaker, who has already announced his departure from the club.

And the president also believes Newcastle would be a poor choice of destination for Cabella.

"Yes, the great Newcastle made us an offer of €8m three weeks ago and I refused", he told Le 10 Sport.

"I think Newcastle is not for him and I also think these guys take us for idiots.

"They sold [Yohan] Cabaye to PSG for I don't know how many millions and they should not take us for fools."

Marseille are also interested in Cabella, but Nicollin insists the price for their Ligue 1 rivals is €16m.

"[Marseille president Vincent] Labrune called my son [Laurent Nicollin, Montpellier vice-president] to say he was interested.

"But they paid €15m for [Florian] Thauvin and they do not want to do the same for Cabella. I like Labrune, he is my friend, but if he wants [Cabella], he should give me €16m."
