Belgium national team coach Marc Wilmots has said that he will not take any chances with Vincent Kompany’s injury ahead of their clash against Russia on Sunday.

Belgium came from behind to beat Algeria 2-1 on Tuesday at the Estadio Mineirao, Belo Horizonte.

Wilmots has confirmed that his captain, Kompany, suffered a groin strain against the Algerians earlier this week.

“We have to wait and see but I will not take any chances with him”, the manager said in a press conference.

"In the last five minutes [of the match against Algeria] Vincent felt something. He had hoped that after a night's sleep it would go away, but that was not the case.

“Then we decided not to take any risk and let him work with the medical staff.”

Wilmots confirmed that the medical team are working with the Manchester City defender to get him fit for the game against Russia.

However, he warned that if he will not take a risk with Kompany if he is not fit and his injury will be closely monitored.

“But I will not take any risk with Vincent, it’s not the time to start doing crazy things.

“We need to wait and see how the injury heals. I am not a doctor and I'm always careful.”
