Shinji Kagawa is looking at the Louis van Gaal era at Old Trafford as his chance for a fresh start at Manchester United.

Kagawa arrived at the club from Borussia Dortmund with a sky high reputation in 2012, but has struggled to make an impact or carve out a regular spot in the side.

The Japan international is hoping that with Van Gaal resetting the clock, things will be different – and he is ready to give his all.

He told AFP Tokyo: "I'm very excited.

"It is a new start and I feel recharged.

"It is up to the players to get the results we need. I have a strong desire to do well.

"I will look at my game and accept the challenge filled with ambition."

Van Gaal has vowed to give the current squad every chance to impress over the coming weeks before he takes his first steps into the transfer market.

Indeed, though Manchester United have already signed Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera, Van Gaal has insisted the pair were identified long before he arrived at Old Trafford.
