Manchester United have confirmed that Wayne Rooney is the new club captain.

The role had been left vacant following the departure of Nemanja Vidic to Inter at the end of the season. And now new Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has made his captaincy choice.

Rooney, who captained the side during their 2-1 pre-season friendly win against Valencia this evening, has been handed the armband, with Darren Fletcher as the club's vice-captain.

The England international striker has been quick to declare his delight at being Manchester United captain, saying via his club's feed: "It is a huge honour [and] a role I will perform with great pride."

Van Gaal also commented on his decision to make Rooney the club's skipper, explaining he feels the striker has demonstrated the right attitude for the job.
