Napoli and Manchester United have had official contact over Belgian midfielder Marouane Fellaini.

The Italian side are keen to take Fellaini from Old Trafford on a season-long loan, though Manchester United have held off making a decision over whether the former Everton man is available.

According to Sky Italia, Napoli have now been in touch with Manchester United over Fellaini and the ball is in the Red Devils' court, with a response expected within the next 48 hours.

Indeed, Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is thinking long and hard over whether to allow the midfielder, who scored in Tuesday evening's friendly against Valencia, to leave the club.

Napoli boss Rafael Benitez believes Fellaini would be the perfect addition to his midfield, but is willing to switch his attention to other targets if no breakthrough can be made.

Manchester United paid £27.5m to sign Fellaini from Everton last summer, with previous manager David Moyes doing the deal.

However, Fellaini could produce only a lacklustre first campaign at Old Trafford, while Moyes paid the price for poor results by losing his job in April.
