Swansea City are close to signing Napoli defender Federico Fernandez for £7m, according to the BBC.

The Argentina international, who joined Napoli from Estudiantes in 2011, spent the 2013/14 campaign on loan at Getafe.

The 25-year-old is expected to fill the void created by the departure of Chico Flores, who joined Qatari club Lekhwiya SC last week.

Swansea want Fernandez to complete his medical by Friday, although he will not be able to play in the Welsh outfit’s Premier League opener against Manchester United on Saturday due to a lack of match fitness.

The Swans are also confident about there being no work permit issues as the centre-back, who has been left out of Napoli’s Champions League squad, holds an Italian passport as well.
