Leeds United boss David Hockaday believes that his side have snapped up striker Billy Sharp at just the right time.

Sharp completed a permanent switch to Elland Road earlier this week, swapping Southampton for Leeds and finally completing a move he had been often mooted to be close to making.

For Hockaday, bagging the signature of Sharp at the age of 28 is signing a player at his peak and the manager has backed the former Scunthorpe United hitman to make a big impact.

"Yeah, I do [think we’ve got him in his prime]", Hockaday told a press conference earlier today.

"I think we've got him at a good time.

"He needs a fresh challenge, he needs to play, and he's a goalscorer.

"He creates as well, the ball sticks with him and he's clever."

Sharp sampled Championship football last term through loan spells with Reading and Doncaster Rovers, before returning to Southampton for pre-season training this summer.

The striker trained with Leeds earlier today and Hockaday has confirmed he is available and in the mix to make his debut for the club against Middlesbrough on Saturday.
