Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has dubbed Luis Suarez a "friend of Liverpool" and revealed the striker sent his old manager a good luck text message before today's Premier League clash against Southampton.

Rodgers' Reds beat the Saints 2-1 to start their Premier League campaign on a positive note and the Northern Irishman revealed post-match that Suarez had been hoping for the best for his former team-mates.

"He sent us a lovely text this morning wishing us all the best and that we start strong. It was a great gesture", he told his post-match press conference.

"He's a friend of Liverpool now. But we look forward. We're bigger than any one single player."

Suarez was sold to Barcelona for £75m earlier this summer and is currently banned for four months due to biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup.

The striker is allowed to train with his new team-mates however and participate in friendly matches.

He is expected to play for Barcelona in tomorrow night's Joan Gamper Trophy against Club Leon.
