Manchester United are already well advanced with their planning in the eventuality that they lose the race for Roma centre-back Mehdi Benatia.

Louis van Gaal's men are keen on snapping up Benatia, but face serious competition from Bayern Munich, whose technical director Michael Reschke is already in Italy to negotiate a deal with Roma.

The 27-year-old remains Manchester United's preferred defensive addition, but according to Corriere dello Sport, the Red Devils are showing interest in another centre-back plying his trade in Serie A.

And the man in question is AC Milan defender Philippe Mexes, who is being lined up as an alternative to Benatia.

Mexes has been of interest to Manchester United in the past, but has continued his career in Italy.
