AC Milan are ready to open talks with Nigel de Jong’s representatives over a new contract for the Dutchman.

The tough-tackling midfielder, who played a key role in the Netherlands finishing third in the World Cup, has only one year left in his deal with Milan.

The midfielder, who joined the Italian giants from Manchester City in 2012, generated interest among a number of European clubs with his performances at the World Cup.

Louis van Gaal, who is desperate to add steel to the Manchester United midfield, is an admirer of the combative 29-year-old midfielder.

The Rossoneri are ready to offer a contract renewal to De Jong as Filippo Inzaghi considers the Dutchman crucial to his plans for this season.
