Former Manchester United midfielder Arnold Muhren feels that if the club can add one or two new players to the squad, Louis van Gaal will bring success back to Old Trafford.

Muhren was the first Dutch player to represent Manchester United and made 70 league appearances for the club in the mid-1980s.

The 63-year-old is interested to see what his compatriot does at Old Trafford, but feels that Van Gaal should be afforded time to implement his ideas at the club.

“It will be very interesting to see what Van Gaal can do with this team and the style of play”, the former Dutch international told the club’s official site.

“I am very confident we can be successful, but we have to give the manager time.”

Muhren believes that if Van Gaal is afforded the funds to strengthen the squad with one or two key signings, then Manchester United could win trophies this season.

“Louis told a Dutch newspaper he has been surprised by how quickly the players have adapted to his methods, so if he can strengthen the squad with one or two new players, then we are in with a shout of achieving success.”
