Lazar Markovic has spoken of his admiration for Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, a player he feels is indelibly linked to the Reds.

Liverpool swooped to snap up Markovic from Benfica for £20m earlier this summer, adding the highly-rated Serbian winger to their ranks.

The former Partizan Belgrade starlet insists he knew all about Liverpool before putting pen to paper at Anfield, with Gerrard the man he associates with the Reds.

"When we say Liverpool most of us think of Steven Gerrard, and that's not only the case with us who were born in the 90s", he told the club's site.

"He is a legend, an icon, the king of the club. Yet still he is completely natural and normal.

"We all listen to him and treat him with the utmost respect.

"He welcomed me like a true captain and a great gentleman, just like he did with all the other new guys."

Markovic missed Liverpool's Premier League opener at the weekend, a 2-1 win over Southampton, but will be bidding to make his debut for the Reds as soon as possible.
