Sunderland manager Gus Poyet believes that the club are close to knowing one way or another whether they can sign Fabio Borini from Liverpool.

The Black Cats had a bid for Borini accepted by Liverpool earlier this summer, £12m plus a further £2m in bonus payments, but the forward has taken his time over deciding upon the move.

Borini has been waiting to see what other options come his way, but the clock is ticking down to the closure of the transfer window on 1st September and Poyet expects a decision soon.

Asked for an update on the Borini situation following his side's 1-1 draw against Manchester United today, Poyet said on Sky Sports: "I think we're getting close to a final decision either way, which is good because it's been too long.

"So it's time now that a yes is coming or a no and we need to move on."

Borini spent last term on loan at Sunderland from Liverpool and played a key role as the Black Cats avoided relegation from the Premier League.

The forward has also been linked with Serie A duo Inter and Napoli.
