Manchester City midfielder Samir Nasri believes his side have made a statement by beating Liverpool 3-1 tonight, with the win worth more than three points.

Liverpool were in control for the first half hour of the Premier League fixture at the Etihad Stadium, but saw themselves fall behind in the 41st minute when Stevan Jovetic opened the scoring.

Jovetic then quickly added a second after the break (55th minute) before Sergio Aguero, on as a second half substitute, fired the hosts 3-0 ahead in the 69th minute.

Liverpool did secure a consolation, with Rickie Lambert helping the ball home with just seven minutes to play.

But Manchester City were not troubled and ran out comfortable winners, delighting Nasri, who thinks the win against title rivals was very important.

"I think so [it was a statement of intent]", he told Sky Sports.

"I think every game we play at home against a team of the big four it's like six points and you have to make a big statement.

"So it's important to make a statement in these kinds of games", the Frenchman added.
