Stevan Jovetic has underlined the importance of Manchester City beating Liverpool 3-1- this evening, because the Reds are viewed as title challengers at the Etihad Stadium.

Liverpool started well, dominating the opening exchanges, but found themselves behind on the 41 minute mark when Jovetic hit the back of the net.

And before Liverpool could even think about mounting a comeback in the second half, the former Fiorentina man struck again, finding the back of the net in the 55th minute.

Sergio Aguero, on off the bench, added a third for the hosts in the 69th minute, while a Rickie Lambert goal in the 83rd minute for Liverpool proved to be no more than a consolation.

And Jovetic feels the win was crucial, telling Sky Sports: "I think so [it was crucial because Liverpool are one of the teams [fighting] for the Premier League.

"We knew that and I think we played very well and it was an important victory for us."

Jovetic, who missed large chunks of last season through injury, also insists he is not thinking about giving boss Manuel Pellegrini a selection headache and is just concentrating on his job.

"It's difficult [to get in the team], I know that, but I just do my job when I go out onto the pitch and he [Pellegrini] decides."
