Sunderland have confirmed that French defender Modibo Diakite has been released from his contract through mutual consent.

The 27-year-old joined the Black Cats from Lazio last summer and still had two years left on his deal.

He made only eight first team appearances for the Mackems before he was shipped out on loan to Fiorentina in January this year.

After making eleven appearances for La Viola, Diakite returned to Sunderland this summer.

However, the club have decided to part ways with the French defender and terminated his contract earlier today through mutual consent.

It remains to be been seen whether Diakite has a move lined up to another club on transfer deadline day.
