Former Italy defender Marco Materazzi has signed for the Chennai-based franchise in the Indian Super League.

The 41-year-old will be following in the footsteps of his former Italy team-mate Alessandro Del Piero, who moved to India to join the Delhi-based side.




Materazzi will take up the dual role of player and manager for the team co-owned by Bollywood star Abhishek Bacchan and will arrive in India on Thursday, according to international news agency Reuters.

He will also be joined by the likes of David Trezeguet, Robert Pires, Fredrik Ljungberg and Nicolas Anelka in India.

Having started his club career with Italian side Marsala, Materazzi went on to play for some of the top clubs around the world such as Everton and Inter Milan.

His best period however was with the Nerazzurri for whom he played a total of 301 matches between 2001 and 2011, scoring 21 goals, and winning the Champions League.

He also earned 41 caps for Italy, scoring two goals.
