Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand is convinced that Louis van Gaal will succeed at Old Trafford if he is given the time to do so.

Ferdinand left the Red Devils earlier this summer when his contract expired, moving to fellow Premier League side QPR when the Old Trafford outfit ushered him out of the door.

And Van Gaal has massively revamped a squad which finished just seventh last term, spending over £150m on new faces, including Radamel Falcao and Angel di Maria.

Ferdinand feels that despite a lacklustre start to the campaign, Manchester United will eventually find the right formula.

He told the BBC: "Pre-season I was really excited for Man United. They looked really fit, really decisive and the players looked like they had a good understanding of the system. It was almost a complete reversal once the season started.

"But I think they'll get it right. The manager who is there now gets things right and I have every confidence he will bring good times back to Manchester United, it is just a question of how long.

"I'm sure they will be looking to start well after the international break but let's hope it takes a bit longer with that. A clean sheet for us at Old Trafford would be nice."

Ferdinand made 455 appearances in all competitions for Manchester United between 2002 and 2014 and faces his old club today with QPR.
