Liverpool have opened talks with Philippe Coutinho's agent in a bid to extend his contract at Anfield.

The Reds snapped up Coutinho from Italian giants Inter in January 2013 and he has become a firm fan favourite on Merseyside, also playing his way back into the Brazil squad through his performances.

Liverpool, who lost Luis Suarez to Barcelona earlier this summer, are keen to keep hold of Coutinho and want to reward him with an improved contract, running until 2020.

Talks have now started between the club and the player's agent, according to Sky Italia, with an agreement expected to take around a month to be achieved.

The playmaker clocked up 13 appearances in his first half season with the Reds, scoring three goals.

He improved on that last term with five goals in 33 Premier League games, as Liverpool finished second and secured a return to the Champions League.

Coutinho, who wears the number 10 shirt with Liverpool, is currently under contract at Anfield until the summer of 2018.
