Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany has poured praise on his side’s new signing Eliaquim Mangala.

The French international, who joined the Citizens from FC Porto this summer, made his Manchester City debut in their 1-1 draw with leaders Chelsea at the weekend.

Mangala partnered Kompany at the heart of Manchester City’s defence and put in a commendable performance against the Blues at the Etihad Stadium.

And Kompany, who was impressed with the 23-year-old’s display, has backed Mangala to succeed at Manchester City.

"He was tremendous. I don't think he's played for five months”, he told FIFA’s official site.

"I think it is up to him how good he could be but it looks like he is eager to progress, which is important at his age as he is still young.

"Obviously you can see he has all the basics to be more than a good defender. He will need some time, like everyone else, and with time he will improve.

“Going by this performance you will be looking forward to what he can achieve."

Mangala, whose contract with Manchester City runs until the summer of 2019, made 91 appearances in all competitions for his former employers Porto, scoring 11 times.

The centre-back has three caps for France to his name and has also represented the nation at Under-21 level.
