Wolfsburg sporting director Klaus Allofs has waved away speculation that Manchester United want the club's defender Ricardo Rodriguez and explained a contract extension is in the works for the Switzerland international.

Rodriguez is thought to have been recommended to Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal by his former assistant at Bayern Munich, Andries Jonker, who recently worked at Wolfsburg; Jonker now heads up Arsenal's academy.

For Allofs though, parting ways with the 22-year-old is a bridge too far and something which is not even on the agenda at Wolfsburg, unlike a new contract.

"Ricardo is a very valuable player for us. We think that his development is not even complete yet", Allofs said to Kicker when asked about the transfer speculation.

"This [a new contract] is at the top of our list and we'll look at it in due course."

Wolfsburg picked Rodriguez up from Swiss outfit FC Zurich in 2012 for a fee of £7.5m.

The defender arrived highly rated and wasted no time in impressing at the Volkswagen Arena.

Rodriguez has won 26 caps for Switzerland at international level so far.
