Hamburg have already activated their purchase option in Lewis Holtby's loan and will keep the midfielder on a contract until 2018, according to German daily Bild.

The Bundesliga outfit snapped up Holtby on a season-long loan deal with a purchase option this summer, taking the out-of-favour midfielder back to his native Germany.

And Hamburg have been so impressed with Holtby that they have agreed to pay the agreed purchase price to Tottenham, with €6.5m heading to Spurs for the 24-year-old.

It marks a speedy return to Germany for Holtby, who joined Spurs from Schalke in January 2013.

He was sent on loan to Fulham for the second half of last term, but could not help the Cottagers avoid relegation from the Premier League.

The schemer has made five appearances in the Bundesliga so far this term, but is still awaiting his first goal for his new club.
