Manchester City midfielder David Silva is doubtful for Sunday’s Manchester derby after suffering a knee injury during his side’s 2-0 loss to Newcastle United in the League Cup last night.

The Spaniard picked up the injury early in the first half of the contest at the Etihad Stadium and was replaced by Samir Nasri in the ninth minute.

And Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini, who revealed that Silva will be assessed today to determine the extent of the injury, refused to acknowledge that his side’s heavy round of fixtures was the reason behind the 28-year-old’s knee problem.

“We will see tomorrow [Thursday]. David has a problem with his knee but I don’t know how serious it is”, the manager told the club official site.

“There was no reason why David cannot play.

“We played on Saturday and had four days to recover so I don’t think that was a reason.

“He was prepared to play but maybe not the whole game.”

Silva, who has scored twice and provided a further two assists in 14 games in all competitions for the Citizens this season, joined the club from Valencia in 2010.
