Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has insisted that the club only buy players to strengthen their squad and not to weaken their rivals.

The Bavarians and Borussia Dortmund have been at loggerheads since Rummenigge revealed the release clause in Marco Reus’ contract earlier this year.

Dortmund are annoyed by Bayern Munich’s behaviour and Jurgen Klopp has said that the German champions will pay for their misdemeanour.

Rummenigge insisted earlier this week that Reus is a possible transfer target and refused to rule out the possibility of Bayern Munich invoking the release clause in the German international’s contract.

The latest episode has added more substance to the growing belief that Bayern Munich are out to weaken their rivals by buying their best players.

But Rummenigge has strongly refuted those charges and said that the club only buy players with the sole aim of strengthening the squad. They have no intention to weaken their rivals.

“We do not need to weaken anyone”, the German said in the club’s official matchday magazine.

“If we think of buying a player, we do it for the single reason of strengthening our team and increase the overall quality of the squad.”
