Liverpool chief executive Ian Ayre insists the club will not put pressure on captain Steven Gerrard to sign a contract extension.

Gerrard is out of contract at the end of the season and he has been offered a fresh deal by the Reds to remain at Anfield.

However, the 34-year-old says he is in no rush to sign and will take his time deciding over his future.

For Ayre, who wants Gerrard to stay, that is only fit and proper and no pressure will be applied at Liverpool's end.

"We have made an offer to Steven and we have to be respectful to him and where he is in his career", Ayre was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"There is no pressure from our side.

"He is an iconic part of this football club and we want to see him here for many years – and that is not just about his playing career", the chief executive added.
