AC Milan look set to face opposition from Manchester United for the signature of Real Madrid left-back Fabio Coentrao next month.

The Rossoneri want to scoop Coentrao up on loan in the January transfer window, with an option to sign him on a permanent basis should he impress.

The Portuguese, who has slipped down the pecking order at the Bernabeu, is expected to be made available for transfer by the European champions.

However, according to Spanish daily AS, AC Milan look likely to face competition from Manchester United for the Portugal international.

Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal rates Coentrao and is keen to take him to Old Trafford to bolster his squad in the new year.

It is not clear whether Van Gaal wants Coentrao on a permanent basis or would, like AC Milan, first look at a loan agreement.

The Red Devils came within a whisker of signing Coentrao under former boss David Moyes, but saw the transfer window shut just before the deal could be done.
