Former AC Milan and Italy defender Alessandro Nesta has insisted that the FIFA Ballon d’Or should not be given to Manuel Neuer.

Germany’s World Cup winning goalkeeper has been nominated along with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for the Ballon d’Or, the ceremony for which is scheduled to be held next month.

Neuer has been praised for his performances for Germany during their World Cup winning campaign and he also played a crucial role in Bayern Munich’s league triumph last season.

The 28-year-old has also been lauded for reinventing the goalkeeping position and he almost plays the role of a defensive sweeper for Bayern Munich and Germany at the back.

But the former Italian defender feels the Ballon d’Or should go to someone who does something special on the pitch and has backed Ronaldo to retain his title.
