Newcastle United are eyeing a move for Sporting Lisbon’s Spanish winger Diego Capel as the club look to strengthen key areas of their squad for the second half of the season.

An accomplished winger who can play on both flanks, Capel has failed to nail down a starting spot at Sporting Lisbon this term and has made only one league start for the club.

Arriving from Sevilla in the summer of 2011, the 26-year-old has gradually seen himself pushed to the fringes of the Portuguese outfit and is looking for a way out of the club.

According to Portuguese daily O Jogo, Newcastle United are tracking developments at the Estadio Jose Alvalade and are ready to make a bid for the out-of-favour winger.

The Magpies are looking to add some creativity in the winter transfer window and feel that Capel’s versatility will provide them more options in the second half of the season.

With the player also ready to leave the club, it remains to be seen what sort of fee Newcastle are prepared to pay to bring the 26-year-old to England this month.
