Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has revealed that they are yet to ascertain the extent of Phil Jones’ injury which he sustained during last night's match against Burnley.

Jones had to be substituted in the fifth minute of the match after he suffered a knee injury. His replacement Chris Smalling scored twice during the match to help Manchester United seal a 3-1 win at Old Trafford.

The defender was plagued by a hamstring and a shinbone injury earlier this season which have seen him make only 14 Premier League appearances so far.

And Van Gaal is unsure about the extent of Jones’ latest injury.

“I think, for Jones, we have to wait and see”, the manager told MUTV.

However, the Dutchman hinted that Jones’ latest setback could rule him out of first team action for a long time.

“I think it shall be difficult as he was very disappointed when I spoke with him. Maybe it's a knee problem so it's not good.”

To compound Manchester United injury concerns, midfielder Daley Blind lasted only 39 minutes before he was replaced by Ander Herrera last night due to a head injury.

But the manager is confident that his compatriot will be back to full fitness in time for their fifth round FA Cup tie against Preston North End due to be played at Deepdale on Monday evening.

“Blind has a headache but I don't think he is out of the game on Monday.”
