Paul Scholes feels Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United side are reluctant to take risks when on the ball, which has resulted in some ‘miserable’ football being churned out by the Dutchman's team.

Though they are third in the Premier League table at the moment, the Dutchman has come under fire for Manchester United’s lack of a cutting edge and creativity up front.

Dominating possession in most games, Van Gaal’s Manchester United side have rarely pinned the opposition back into their penalty box and have been creating very few chances this season.

Robin van Persie is their top scorer this term with ten goals in all competitions and is the only player in the Manchester United squad who has managed to hit double figures.

The former Red Devil admits that he has sometimes struggled to sit through a Manchester United game this term and has criticised their style of play.

Describing their football as miserable, Scholes feels very few Manchester United players are prepared to play the risky balls, which is compromising their ability to create more chances.

“It does not give me any pleasure to say that at the moment I am struggling to watch Louis van Gaal’s team with any great enjoyment”, Scholes wrote in his column for the Independent.

“They beat Burnley on Wednesday night, but it was Burnley who had by far the best of the first half.

“At times, United’s football is miserable. To beat opposing teams you have to attack, and to attack you have to take risks.

“Too few of the players in the current team are prepared to take those risks.”

Despite the criticism about their lack of creativity, Manchester United have managed to score 43 goals in the league this season and only Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal have scored more.
