Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has stressed that his players’ views on him are more important to him than what others think about his coaching style.

After a difficult start to the season, Van Gaal has managed to steady the Manchester United ship and has guided them to third in the Premier League table.

Though they have lost just once in the last 19 matches in all competitions, the Red Devils have come in for criticism for their sterile, possession-based football from some quarters.

The Dutchman’s methods have been questioned and he has been criticised for tampering with the traditional free-flowing, counter-attacking style of football that Manchester United played in the past.

Van Gaal is not bothered about what others think about him, but stressed that the approval and the credit that his players have given him for their performances matter to him the most.

He indicated that his methods have the backing of his players at Old Trafford and said that everyone at Manchester United is pulling in one direction, dismissing criticism as mainly coming from the media.

"The credit I get is from the players”, Van Gaal said in a press conference, via his club's site.

“This is the highest credit I can get because that is also the most important thing – that my players, my staff and myself can work together on the way we work now and that gives the spirit.

"You know as media people that the media is always critical. It is like that.

“You are part of the game, it's your role, so we have to manage that and I believe we manage that fantastically."
