Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson has taken a swipe at Manchester United hitman Robin van Persie, while telling Louis van Gaal to give Radamel Falcao a consistent run in the team before coming to a decision over his future at Old Trafford.

Van Persie picked up an injury against Swansea City on Saturday as the Red Devils slipped to a 2-1 defeat at the Liberty Stadium.

The Dutchman may now be looking at a spell on the sidelines and for Lawrenson that may be a blessing in disguise for Manchester United, with the former defender believing the striker is doing nowhere near enough in a red shirt at present.

Lawrenson told the BBC: "I just look at Van Persie and every time I see him I just say 'you know what, you're taking the mickey. You're picking your money up and you're not doing enough'."

And the ex-Liverpool defender feels that Falcao deserves a good run in the team to make his case.

He also urged Van Gaal to play Rooney alongside the Colombian in an effort to bring the best out of him.

"I feel a bit sorry for Falcao, he's not been great. Stick Rooney in with him for six games and then make your judgement", Lawrenson said.

Falcao is at Old Trafford on a season-long loan from Ligue 1 outfit Monaco.

Manchester United do have an option to keep him permanently at the end of the season, but will need to fork out a fee of around €55m to do so.
