Paul Scholes, writing in his column for the Independent, feels that partnering Robin van Persie with Wayne Rooney up front is the way forward for Manchester United this season.

Manchester United have tried to partner Radamel Falcao and Van Persie up front, but both strikers have failed to find the back of the net consistently and Louis van Gaal finally dropped the Colombian last weekend in favour of Wayne Rooney, who has been moved around in the midfield this term.

And though Manchester United didn’t manage to win against Swansea, instead going down to a 2-1 defeat, Scholes feels the Manchester United captain and Van Persie showed enough together to suggest that Van Gaal should continue with the partnership.

Reflecting on the performance against Garry Monk’s men, the former England man feels Manchester United played well and started creating a lot of chances, that were not visible in their performances in the last few weeks.

“I thought that despite losing to Swansea they played better”, Scholes wrote.

“They had 18 goal attempts, which used to be the norm, but that count has been much lower recently.

“Playing Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie as a striking partnership has to be the way forward for them now.”

However, Van Gaal may have to wait for the opportunity to pair the duo together in attack again.

Van Persie has been sidelined with an ankle injury and Falcao is again expected to partner the Manchester United captain for Sunderland’s visit to Old Trafford tomorrow.
