Louis van Gaal will not confirm whether an injury picked up by Robin van Persie means that Radamel Falcao will start for Manchester United tomorrow against Sunderland.

Van Persie picked up a knock in the club's 2-1 defeat to Swansea City last weekend and was forced to leave the Liberty Stadium on crutches.

His absence may hand an opportunity to Falcao, who is still desperately trying to convince Van Gaal to sanction a permanent move from Monaco to Manchester United for him at the end of the season.

The Dutchman also has young striker James Wilson available for selection tomorrow at Old Trafford however and will not say whether Van Persie's absence automatically means Falcao will play.

"The possibility is higher of course because when a striker is away another has to play", he told a press conference.

"I never give you any openings [on team selection] so we will have to wait and see."

Van Gaal also provided an update on Van Persie, explaining he expects the striker to be out for more than two weeks, although he cannot say exactly when he will be fit to return to action.

"He has an ankle problem so I don’t think it is heavy, but an ankle problem takes a long time.

"It’s not 1 or two weeks, but we will have to wait and see", the Red Devils boss concluded.
