Louis van Gaal is confident over Manchester United's chances of finishing in the Premier League's top four this season, but explained that anything can happen in football.

Manchester United moved up to third in the Premier League table today by beating Sunderland 2-0 at Old Trafford. They now have 50 points from 27 games to their name and are closing in on a return to Europe's top competition.

Van Gaal feels that with the Red Devils having been consistently in the top four for a number of weeks, they can be dubbed a "stable team". However, he does not want to predict absolutely that they will be within the top four by the end of the season.

"We are on our way and I think we are already for more than ten or 12 weeks in the top four, maybe longer", he told the BBC.

"I think we are a stable team in the top four, so I hope that at the end of the season we are still there.

"But you can never predict it", the Dutchman added.

Next up for Manchester United is a trip to Newcastle, before a run of tough games with Premier League clashes against Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool, along with an FA Cup quarter-final tie against Arsenal.

The Red Devils also face the Gunners in their second last game of the season, entertaining Arsene Wenger's men at Old Trafford.
