Leeds United have confirmed that Italian owner Massimo Cellino has been granted permission to return to the club's board.

Cellino has recently completed a Football League ban, which prevented him from running Leeds and caused him to resign his role as president and step back from his ownership.

Now the Italian businessman is back in the driving seat and has replaced Andrew Umbers as the club's chairman, with Umbers, a key Cellino ally, staying on as a director.

Leeds officially announced in a statement: "Leeds United can confirm that Massimo Cellino has been granted Football League permission to return to the club’s board.

"Mr Cellino will take up the role as Leeds United chairman with immediate effect after passing the League’s Owners and Directors Test", it added.

Cellino is now expected to address the situation of head coach Neil Redfearn, who has not yet been confirmed as continuing in his role into next season.

The controversial Italian is also likely to hold talks with the club's sporting director Nicola Salerno, for whom the future is less than clear, given talk he has resigned from his job at Elland Road.
