James Milner admits his move to Liverpool was in part motivated by the fear that he could be warming the bench at Manchester City more often than playing.

The England international left the Citizens earlier this summer when his contract expired to make the move to Liverpool, where he has been handed the iconic number 7 shirt, worn by legends such as Luis Suarez, Kenny Dalglish and Kevin Keegan.

Manchester City made Milner an offer to remain at the Etihad Stadium, but he knocked it back and has now revealed he wanted to ensure regular first team football, something which could have been lacking under Manuel Pellegrini.

Milner told his new club's site: "This is a chance for me to prove something.

"I want to look back at my career and feel I got everything out of it and was the best player I could be and won as much as I possibly could", the midfielder continued.

"I don't want to be sat at the end of my career thinking I could have done more, or left something out there.

"I believe I can achieve things here where I could maybe have found myself on the bench at City.

"That doesn't mean I am guaranteed to play in every game at Liverpool but I feel I have a better chance of playing every week if I perform.

"I think there were times at City when I had good games and then because of rotation you are out again.

"I feel it is my hands. By no means do I think I am going to play every game. I know I have to get out there and do my stuff and hopefully help Liverpool be very successful."

Milner has taken a central midfield role for Liverpool during their pre-season tour of Asia and Australia, scoring against both Brisbane Road and Adelaide United. He will hope to retain his preferred position throughout the impending Premier League campaign.
