Liverpool youngster Joe Gomez has revealed that his side have travelled a fair distance since their drubbing at the hands of Stoke last season and will be up for the challenge this time around.

The Reds were humbled 6-1 at the Britannia Stadium on the final day of their 2014/15 domestic season and will visit the same venue for their opening fixture of their new season.

Gomez, who is still new to the surroundings at Anfield, having arrived at the club this summer from Championship outfit Charlton Athletic, feels that the mood amongst the players is one of optimism and there is not the least amount of memory of what happened there last season.

According to the 18-year-old, his side have strengthened significantly this summer and will go there with the kind of confidence that is needed to win a match.

"I remember watching the highlights of that game on TV", Gomez told his club's official website.

"I didn’t know at that point I’d be coming to Liverpool. I’d spoken to them but nothing was certain.

"It was an extraordinary result but there’s been a lot of changes to the squad since then.

"Everyone is up for it. I’m sure those who were involved in May will use it as motivation. After a good pre-season everyone is confident we can go there and get a result.

"Since I’ve been here that game hasn’t been talked about. Everyone is positive and looking forward to the game."

The defender arrived at Anfield on the back of an impressive debut season for Charlton and was part of the Reds' pre-season tour of Thailand, Australia and Malaysia, putting in a string of notable performances.
