Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini requested Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin by signed by his club, but the Uruguayan is all set to extend his contract with Los Rojiblancos, according to Madrid-based daily AS.

The Citizens struggled with defensive frailties last season as captain Vincent Kompany found it difficult to stay match-fit for the entirety of the campaign and big-money signing Eliaquim Mangala failed to make his mark in his inaugural season in English top flight football.

The Manchester giants ended up relinquishing the Premier League title to Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea.

This summer, Pellegrini has been keen on addressing the defensive failings and requested Atletico Madrid’s defensive mainstay Godin’s signature with the lure of a long-term contract and a higher salary.

However, the Citizens appear to have failed in their pursuit as Los Rojiblancos are on the verge of extending the defender’s contract until 2019 with a hike in his existing salary.
