Juventus have opened talks to explore the possibility of signing Manchester United linked Nicolas Gaitan from Benfica, it has been claimed.

The Argentina midfielder has been linked with the Estadio da Luz exit door for much of the summer, with Manchester United the side chiefly linked with snapping him up, while there has also been interest from Atletico Madrid and Valencia at points.

But Gaitan has stayed put at Benfica, despite the club insisting they would be happy for him to depart if his €35m buy-out clause is met.

Now, as the transfer window enters its final stretch, Juventus are looking at the possibility of signing the midfielder.

According to Portuguese TV station TVI24, cited by Italian outlet Tutto Mercato, the Serie A champions have opened talks for Gaitan.

The Turin-based club have been scouring the transfer market this summer to answer coach Massimiliano Allegri's call for a player able to operate in a 'number 10' role.

Juventus have been linked with Bayern Munich's Mario Gotze and Schalke's Julian Draxler, but without success.

It remains to be seen whether the Bianconeri can push through a deal to take Gaitan to Italy.
