A poor start to the new La Liga campaign has convinced Valencia to line up a winter transfer window move for Benfica midfielder Nicolas Gaitan.

Los Che were heavily linked with the Argentine throughout the summer, along with Atletico Madrid and Manchester United, but despite Gaitan seeming to be on the brink of heading to Old Trafford, he remained at the Estadio da Luz.

But Gaitan's release clause of €35m still applies and according to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Valencia are now considering moving for the Argentine in the winter window.

Valencia have picked up just six points from their opening five La Liga games to sit just ninth in the standings.

Los Che went down away 1-0 at Espanyol earlier this week, while in the Champions League their opening group game saw a 3-2 home defeat to Russian side Zenit St. Petersburg.

Valencia would be keen to negotiate a price lower than Gaitan's €35m clause with Benfica, considering the buy-out sum too high.

It also remains to be seen whether Benfica will agree to play ball midway through the season and any deal may depend on whether the Portuguese side are still involved in the Champions League.
