Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan believes the club's players answered the challenge of head coach Steve Evans last night against Cardiff City.

Leeds went into the Championship fixture not having recorded a win at Elland Road for over seven months, but an Alex Mowatt strike, hit from long range, secured a 1-0 win over the Welsh side.

Evans had been scathing after Leeds' lost 2-0 at home to Blackburn Rovers last week and challenged his players to prove they were good enough to play on a stage such as Elland Road.

And Whelan feels that last night against Cardiff, the Leeds players stood up and proved they are good enough to pull on a white shirt at home.

"Steve Evans questioned the players, if they were good enough to play for Leeds – and they’ve answered that", Whelan said on BBC Radio Leeds.

"Courage, guts – what a performance, and Steve Evans has enjoyed it as well.

"That is the Leeds United we expect. That was a man's performance", he added.

Leeds will be aiming to build on their win over Cardiff this coming weekend when they travel to face Huddersfield Town.

Huddersfield have today sacked Chris Powell as manager.
