Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson is of the opinion that people are “jumping the gun” regarding Steven Gerrard’s return to the Merseyside club.

Gerrard spent his entire career at Liverpool before deciding to join MLS outfit LA Galaxy in the summer after the expiry of his contract at Anfield.

However, new Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, who replaced Brendan Rodgers last month, acknowledged that he has talked to Gerrard regarding the midfielder’s return to Anfield.

But the German tactician was quick to add that he insisted Gerrard to train with Liverpool as he bids to keep fit for the 2016 MLS season and nothing else is on the cards at the moment.

And Lawrenson insisted that the situation has been blown up, with a section of the media saying that Gerrard could well play and captain his beloved club again.

"It is something that was mentioned when he joined LA Galaxy and I said at the time was a really good idea", he told the BBC.

"The manager has changed but the general principle hasn't.

"If he wants to keep ticking over wouldn't it make more sense to do it at a club he knows, that he has been captain of, rather than Everton or Manchester United or someone else?

"And why wouldn't Jurgen Klopp want him to come down to the club.

"I just think people are jumping the gun and suddenly saying he is going to play and be captain again. It's rubbish really. They are not even off first base.

"We are talking about a few training sessions. If something comes of it, that is absolutely fine, if it doesn't that is absolutely fine as well."

Gerrard has thus far made 14 appearances in all competitions for LA Galaxy, scoring twice and providing four assists, but he could not help the club exiting the playoffs to Seattle Sounders.
