Inter Milan defender Nemanja Vidic’s agent has revealed that Manchester United wanted to offer his client a new contract before he opted to join the Nerazzurri on a free transfer last year.

Vidic won five Premier League titles and a Champions League during his eight-and-a-half-year stay at Manchester United, but he decided to sign a pre-contract with Inter Milan in January last year for a free transfer to the club in the summer.

There were rumours that Manchester United were eager to hold on to the defender, but the Serbian was keen to seek a fresh challenge after a disappointing campaign under former manager David Moyes.

His agent, Silvano Martina, gave credence to the rumours as he revealed that Manchester United indeed wanted to keep the experienced centre half and offered him a new contract.

The defender’s agent told Gazzetta TV: “In my office I still have the proposed renewal offer from Manchester United.

His move to Inter hasn’t worked out the way he would have wanted it to as Vidic has struggled with form and fitness in Italy and is yet to play this season because of an injury.

On the other hand Manchester United rediscovered some of their old selves under Louis van Gaal and managed to qualify for the Champions League last season.

They are currently just two points off league leaders Manchester City and are top of their Champions League group.
