Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has urged Wayne Rooney to just focus on his football in order to return to form.

Despite scoring seven goals this term, the Manchester United captain has faced criticism for some lackadaisical performances this season and many feel he is on the road to a steady decline.

The former Everton man again received flak for his showing in Manchester United’s disappointing 0-0 draw against PSV Eindhoven last night, which left them in a precarious position in their Champions League group.

Keane feels the Manchester United skipper lacked a cutting edge last night and must step up to the plate to solve his team’s goalscoring woes.

The former midfielder also believes that as a captain Rooney ought to show more responsibility on and off the pitch and must cut out all the off-the-field distractions to get back to full form for the Red Devils.

Keane said in his role as a pundit on ITV: “Wayne lacked composure and quality and he was as guilty as anybody, he needs to step up on the plate.

“You look at Wayne’s legacy at Manchester United, it’s absolutely fantastic, and his goals record is brilliant. But he is the captain, there is bit more responsibility and he needs to got to do a lot more.

“I always question certain players what they are doing off the field. I saw him last week slapping a wrestler. Why is he getting involved in all that nonsense? There is no benefit to him.

“So yeah, I would look at that side of his.”

Louis van Gaal will be hoping Rooney regains his composure ahead of a busy period of the season, which could end up defining Manchester United’s campaign.
