Rangers striker Martyn Waghorn believes his side were relentless against Cowdenbeath in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup at Ibrox yesterday.

Mark Warburton’s side recorded a thumping 5-1 win over Cowdenbeath, with Waghorn scoring a second half hat-trick, his second since his arrival at Ibrox in the summer.

Lee Wallace and Barrie McKay scored in the opening 33 minutes of the game, before Dean Brett pulled one back with a sumptuous free-kick five minutes before the end of the first half.

Waghorn restored his side’s two goal lead three minutes into the second half, after receiving the ball from a nice flick by Gedion Zelalem.

The 25-year-old forward then converted two penalties, both won by full-back James Tavernier, to put the result beyond doubt.

The former Leicester City striker believes that the Gers were disappointed going into the break, having conceded one just before half time, and the break allowed the team to regroup and focus on the game.

Waghorn, who has now scored 25 goals in 27 appearances for the Gers, explained that his side started the second half brilliantly and were relentless in their approach, which tired the Miners.

Speaking in an interview with the club’s official website, Waghorn said: “It wasn’t a concern, although it was disappointing that we had done all the hard work but we had let them back in.

“At half-time, we got in and we took the chance to regroup and refocus, and the way we came out at the start of the second half just really finished the game.

“We were relentless, and kept working hard and they just tired out.

“Fortunately for us the chances kept coming, the gaps kept opening and it was nice to get the goals in the end.”

The Gers host Livingston at Ibrox on Saturday and will be looking to maintain their three point lead at the top of the table.
