Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has confirmed that full-back-cum-winger Ashley Young has suffered a severe groin injury and will need surgery before he can return.

The 30-year-old was replaced by young Cameron Borthwick-Jackson in the 42nd minute of the match which the Red Devils won 1-0 last week against Liverpool.

Giving an injury update to the press ahead of his team's Premier League match against Southampton, the Dutch manager added that his makeshift full-back will add to the ever increasing injury list.

Young has been one of the brightest spots in the Manchester United line up this season with his figures for the league amounting to 16 in which he has managed to provide his team-mates with three assists.

Meanwhile the veteran manager also confirmed that defender Phil Jones and midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger are still unavailable and won't be able to face the Saints tomorrow.

The German midfielder has missed his side's last two games, whiile Jones, a player who has a history with injuries, was also missing from action for the matches against Newcastle and Liverpool.

However, the hosts could have their attacking line-up bolstered with the return of Adnan Januzaj.

The Belgian, who was brought back from a loan spell at Borussia Dortmund, could well play his first match since his return for the senior side.
