Liverpool legend Ray Houghton feels that some players at the club should be worried for their places and must use every opportunity between now and the end of the season to impress Jurgen Klopp.

The Reds went down to a 3-1 penalty shootout defeat to Manchester City in the League Cup final at Wembley on Sunday, with 120 minutes of football having seen the two sides draw 1-1.

Houghton thinks Klopp will have learned about his players due to the final, while he will also be assessing them every day in training.

And with the former midfielder thinking that Klopp will already know some players he wants to sign in the summer, he warned Liverpool's stars to play for their places at the club.

Speaking on LFC TV after the final, Houghton said: "He doesn't have to prove himself to the players. It's the other way round.

"They have to prove to him they deserve to be at the club over the next few years.

"And I am sure he will be assessing them", Houghton added.

The former Republic of Ireland star also explained: "It's not just about the games. It's about the players – who wants to be here next season? I am sure the manager has some he knows he wants to bring in.

"Some should be worried. They need to show Jurgen Klopp in training what they can do."

Liverpool are still alive in the Europa League, where they are due to meet fierce rivals Manchester United in a last 16 tie; it will be the first time the two sides have met in Europe.

And winning the Europa League looks the Reds' best bet when it comes to qualifying for the Champions League next term as they are well adrift of the top four in the Premier League standings.
