Liverpool defender Jon Flanagan is close to agreeing a new three-year deal with the club, according to ITV.

The right-back, whose present deal with the Reds is set to expire in the summer, faced a lengthy spell on the sidelines after picking up a knee injury on his England debut against Ecuador in a friendly in June 2014.

Flanagan returned to action in a 3-0 win over Exeter City in an FA Cup game in January, with the 23-year-old since making five appearances in all competitions for Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp, who has been impressed with Flanagan’s battling performances, wants to keep him at Anfield beyond the season.

The player’s agent and Liverpool chief executive Ian Ayre has already held positive discussions and it has been suggested that Flanagan may put pen to paper on a new three-year deal before the end of the week.
